Espace Louis Vuitton: Seoul

 Looking for Andy

In Apgujeong Rodeo street, I went to see the Andy Warhol exhibit "Looking for Andy" that opened in the Espace Louis Vuitton, a space in the Maison Louis Vuitton Seoul. 

The actual space itself was beautifully designed with a glass/ screen fractal pattern that extends from the building's foundational square shape. 

The elevator on the way up was a fun colored and mirrored room with all four walls and the floor and ceiling made of a red mirrored material. 

The exhibit was based around the portraiture work of Andy Warhol, featuring photography as well as large screen prints and paintings.

The structure of the Fondation de Louis Vuitton, originally in Paris, was designed by Frank Gehry. This space/ branch in Seoul was an extension of that existing design, just in miniature. There was a small-scale model in an exhibition room off the side of the Warhol exhibit that showed the original Fondation as well as a timeline of the design, conception, and construction of the space. 

I visited the Fondation in Paris as well and it was really easy to see how the two spaces were connected design-wise, just on a smaller scale. 

After the exhibit, we went to the rooftop of a nearby store, getting a lovely aerial view of Apgujeong Rodeo. The architecture on the streets was so different from the rest of Seoul, with wide boulevards and towering white concrete luxury department stores. 

The design of each building was on such a large scale, each with an individual flair based on the stores. 

Overall, a very different feel from anywhere else I've been so far. The best comparison I feel like I can make is that the Rodeo area feels like the main street of Las Vegas.
